About the Greenwood Preservation Society
The Greenwood Preservation Society (GWPS) began in 2001 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in Kansas. The organization began with a passion to preserve the unique history of the area. The organization has grown to include many volunteer board members who meet monthly. Their expertise includes backgrounds in construction, real estate, marketing, fundraising, financial management, and entrepreneurship. Their first project was the restoration of the Greenwood Hotel. It serves as a tangible reminder of the cattlemen, oilmen and travelers who did business in and traveled through the doors of the Greenwood Hotel, once known as “The Center of Everything.” They are currently working to bring a statue created by the late Jim Brothers, a Eureka native who once shined shoes at the Greenwood, to the community. The committee is also working with downtown building owners to create a historic district and preserve iconic downtown buildings.
